My ancient, beloved, glacially slow computer got a memory upgrade yesterday! Hooray!
When I moved in November, St. [Unknown site tag] (oops- Replyhazy)
reassembled my computer, making sure everything was put back together the way it was supposed to be. I had no idea what plugged into what! She then made sure all the parts still talked to each other, and the modem still talked to the outside world. I could not survive without such friends! I asked for suggestions as to what, if anything, could be changed or added to make my system better. She said I could probably use some more memory, and our friend KN would be the one to talk to, he's a hardware guy. I don't see him very often, so when I finally did, I asked if he'd be willing to take a look at my computer. So Friday night, he and his wife KN came over, toured my fabulous bachelorette pad, played with the cat, and he diagnosed my computer. "Oh yeah," he said, "you need more memory." "I've got some spare chips at home in the basement that'd probably double your capacity." He also told me that our local university sells surplus computers that are younger and faster than mine, and we could probably cobble together an upgraded system for me pretty cheaply. This is very good news.
The three of us went out for a lovely Indian dinner, then stopped back at their house to pick up the chips. I got to meet their new cat, one of the hairless variety, with skin like varm velvet. Then back to my place to install the memory. KN also set it up so that on Monday morning, after I leave for work, my hard drive will spend several hours "de-fragging" itself. I don't know what this really means exactly, but he said it's a good thing, and I trust him. I thanked him profusely. So, now my computer has a bit more brainpower. It will always be slow, since my modem is also rather primative, but I'm very happy.
