It was so bad last night that I gave up and actually took notes on a couple of sitcoms.
Today, the maintenance page sez they're still having problems, and to ease the load on the LJ computers, posting and commenting for free users are temporarily disabled.
I found this out at lj_maintenance. You can go there any time to see whether problems originate from LJ itself.
