How to feed yourself...
Jan. 4th, 2003 09:29 pmFirst- learn to cook! Today I did something I rarely do, I made food from scratch. I never really learned to cook, I can bake a lovely cake, or delicious cookies, but I couldn't make a meal to save my life. I eat a lot of pre-packaged, "add water and stir" kind of meals. Back when we were married, Whump did a lot of cooking, I cleaned up after, and that worked for us. I like to watch cooking shows, they make it look so easy, and I always promise myself that I'll try to learn a few things.
Today, I was home sick, didn't really want to venture out into the world. I looked in the fridge and the cupboard. Eggs, left over from holiday baking. Parmesan cheese, left over from the tortilla roll-ups. An onion. Three potatoes, how long have they been in there? No idea. Could I do it, Could I make something edible from these things? I felt like trying, and I got to work, digging out my seldom-used frying pan and a spatula. I try to remember all the things I've seen on TV about basic cooking, and I manage to fry the spuds and onions without burning them. I scramble the eggs, throw a handful of cheese on top, and to my surprise, I actually made something pretty good! Perhaps I'll try cooking with meat sometime soon. I'm a big fan of meat, but I've rarely cooked it myself!

Date: 2003-01-04 10:14 pm (UTC)That reminds me, I need to cook for L. soon. My new favorite is a sausage stew I saw on
Unindicted HomemakerMartha Stewart's show. You serve it with polenta... polenta, (Homer drooling noise).Did you know that your Bambi Molesters CDs are out of print? (grr) I may have to 'ahem' rip them when I'm in Madison.
Indicted Housewives...
Hmmm, should I let you borrow those CD's to burn? What's it worth to ya? Million dollars and a pony? 'Cuz that's my going rate...
Wonder if the Bambi's will ever tour the states?

Date: 2003-01-05 02:54 am (UTC)Seriously, there was a time when I could have been considered not only kitchen-challenged, but downright anti-cooking. It was that supposedly axiomatic, "You're a woman, therefore...", against which I heartily rebelled. (However, my middle school classes taught cooking skills to both boys and girls, in mixed groups, and no slouching allowed, everyone had to demonstrate that they'd gotten the current lesson.)
Dear hubby's family gave him a different template, so that he watched his dad doing most of the cooking; he was happy to give it a go as part of his "independence" kit from home. When we got together, we discovered it was a lovely way to spend time together, so began my more house-y epoch.
That said, it sounds like you're in danger of losing your "don't cook" status, because you did absolutely perfect with the ingredients you had at the time, and that, pretty much, is what cooking is all about.
And meat's easy - brown one side, brown the other, heat until cooked inside to the desired doneness. Consume. (Variations for different kinds of meat, i.e. DO NOT eat pink pork or chicken.)
Crazy(returned to her vegetarian-wagon after New Year's, *sniffle*)Soph
