Corflu report, day one...
Apr. 26th, 2003 01:27 amWent to work today, skipped lunch, left at 1:30. Went directly to the eye doctor to pick up my new glasses. Eyeballs are in a state of shock, it's been at least five years since my last update. The frames are very different, much smaller, I like them, but they'll take some getting used to...
Go home and change, then get to the hotel about 4:00. Not many
people are here yet. I see
spikeiowa, but she's busy and distracted preparing for "Fannish Feud" which starts at 5:00.
It turned out to be really funny, the questions all came from a survey taken the week before of 100 drunken British fans in the bar at Eastercon.
Corflu (for those on my list who don't know), is a convention for fanzine fans. Most of the people here are also science fiction fans. I'm not tecnically a fanzine fan, I wrote in an APAzine for eight years, but I've never produced my own fanzine. What's a fanzine? Oh, um, here's where it get's tricky- I'm terrible at explaining things. Write about something. Most zines have a theme. Get friends to contribute articles and artwork. Include letters people wrote to you about your last fanzine. Put it all together, make copies, staple and and mail to hundreds of your closest friends. Do this as often as possible, several times a year is best.
I know many fanzine fans, and many fanzine fans are also on LiveJournal. With Corflu being held in Madison this year, it's a good chance to see old friends, and put faces to LJ folks.
Dinner was rushed but pleasant, and we didn't get back in time for opening ceremonies. We were in time for the ice cream social though, mmmm.... Then it was just hanging out and talking to folks for hours. I finally got a chance to talk to
spikeiowa. I would love to have gotten a bit drunk, but since I can't afford the hotel, I must stay sober and drive home. And so here I am, posting on LJ at stupid o'clock in the morning, because I'm so wired from Pepsi and great conversations, that I'll never get to sleep!! (I have quite the headache too, from the new glasses) I must be fresh for the LJ lunch at 12:15, so off to bed I go. More tomorrow, possibly...

And I've never gotten headaches from new glasses, are you sure the prescription is right? (But I only have nearsightedness and now bifocals).
