Monday, 5/28. We met up with my brother Dave for lunch. It was the one day his girlfriend was free and in town (she lives in Green Bay), so it was our only chance to meet her on this trip. After lunch, I hung out in the lobby for a while, then Luke and I hit the hot tub, our Monday-at-Wiscon tradition. As we were swimming and steaming, a storm blew up outside. Finally, a real storm, lots of wind and heavy rain, though not much thunder. We went back to our room and took a shower, then got dressed and went to the dead dog party. They had great food, and I admit, I ate more than my share. I had been so looking forward to hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] raanve, but something came up, and she had left early. It was hard not to feel hurt and blown off. But I know it wasn't planned, things change sometimes. I wasn't going to let imposter syndrome (she must have left because I'm not cool enough to talk to) take over. I got through it by sitting and talking with other people I'd wanted to talk to all weekend.

Tuesday, 5/29. Packed up, checked out. Said goodbyes, and made my yearly pilgrimage to the Soap Opera. Dad picked us up, and we went back to the house where I proceeded to Wash All The Clothes. Mom was kind enough to tape Mad Men for us, which we'd obviously missed on Sunday night, so we watched it before dinner. (OMG Joan- how could you!?!) Slept one last night in the house I grew up in.

Wednesday, 5/30. Caught the 8:30am bus to Chicago. We were picked up at the airport by Luke's sister Peggy, and taken to his other sister Nora's house. We caught up for a bit, then retired downstairs to where the guestroom is. Plugged in the computer, and saw the horrible news from home in Seattle. A massacre. We didn't know the people who died, but some of our acquaintances from the Art Car community knew them very, very well. What a shame.
We went back upstairs for a wonderful dinner with the whole family, then I slept better than I had the whole trip so far.

Thursday, 5/31. An early start to get to the Museum of Science & Industry. I hadn't been there since I was a kid, and very little was as I remembered. Just the huge train set, really. We went to the Mythbusters exhibit, which was pretty awesome. LOTS of props and things from the show, and a number of try-it-yourself myths, such as:
*Can you hang from a ledge by your fingertips, like they do in the movies?
*Does toast always land butter side down?
*Do you get wetter walking or running through the rain?
*How fast can you throw a playing card?
And my favorite:
*Can you pull a tablecloth out from under the dishes without making a mess?
The answer is- yes! I could have done that one all day!
Look Out! )
We went all over the museum, seeing the transportation wing, medical exhibits, farm area, toy factory, weather and earth science bits, and the NASA exhibit. Had a surprisingly tasty and affordable lunch in the cafeteria. We would have gone through the submarine, but we ran out of time. I took some pictures, but none of them turned out.
I'm getting more germaphobic as I get older. The thing I really noticed about this museum was the lack of any hand sanitizer anywhere. This is a museum for kids, everything was hands-on, push this, pull that. It grossed me out. I like to see old things in cases, and read about them, I don't want to touch things a million other random people have touched. I'm old. Get Off My Lawn!

More another time, I guess..
