Nothing Lost
Jun. 12th, 2010 03:32 amThis will be the end of the continuing saga (told mostly on Facebook) of our personal belongings being strewn around and about the country:
Luke's box was packed at Wiscon. It had both our fancy outfits and shoes, the leftover LJ stickers, party posters, and all the books Luke bought at the convention. It was sent by the at-con shipping service, and arrived this past Weds. One down, two more to go.
My box showed up at my parents a day after the con was over, a week late. I took a few things out, tops to wear in Chicago, put more stuff in, and left it at my folks, with some money for them to send it back to us. I didn't care how, just as long as there was some sort of delivery confirmation. In all the years I've shipped stuff to my folks pre-Wiscon, this is the first time I've ever had a problem. It arrived today. I was so happy to see that box, I felt like part of me was still missing till I saw it. Looking at the fancy dress I didn't end up wearing, I'm actually glad I had another. The original dress was rather wintry, and would have been really warm in the packed and stressful environment of the Sunday night activities. The sleeveless red dress that I found in a rush at Goodwill was way better.
While we were in Oak Park, we went to Penzey's Spices, and stocked up for the year. We had our order shipped, so we wouldn't have to carry it all in our luggage. That box also arrived today. Actually, it arrived yesterday, but we were out when the UPS guy came by. I was super lucky today, as I was getting ready to leave to go pick up Luke, I was worried that I was going to miss UPS a second time. But when I got outside, the truck was across the street. I approached the driver and got my box of spices! Yay! I feel strangely at peace now..
Yesterday, Luke and I wanted to get outside, even thought the weather wasn't perfect. We went to Meadowdale park up in Edmunds. It's about a mile walk downhill through a forest, alongside a stream, to the beach. There is only one way to access the beach, and that is to pass through a tunnel under the train tracks, which also carried the rushing stream. The tunnel wasn't very long, but the stream was over the banks for part of it, and we couldn't tell how deep the water was. We figured, well, we just walked a mile, and we wouldn't want to skip the beach after coming this far, and we're wet anyway, so let's do it! Luke went first, and found out that the water was in fact, almost knee deep. And cold, of course. Not suprisingly, the beach was empty, save for a small yellow tent in the reeds. We didn't see any other people. After a while, we slogged through the stream again and headed back. Now we'd have to walk a mile uphill with completely sopping wet shoes and socks, but it really wasn't that bad. Last winter, I'd bought a pair of hiking poles, and this was the first time we'd used them. They were a huge help. On the way home, we were sucked into the gravity well of a restaurant we like in downtown Edmonds called Clair's. A good day.
I'm sleeping like shit, but even though I got up late today, I was still Super-Productive Woman. I did laundry, dishes, unpacked and put away the boxes that arrived, which involved reorganizing the spice drawer a bit. I made up a box to go to Goodwill. Under my dresser are shoes I'll never need. I'll sometimes buy a pair of sensible shoes that are comfortable, but not exciting, thinking that one day I'll work again and need these for casual office wear. I had about six pair of ugly, dust-coated shoes, and I put them in the Goodwill box, dammit. Now that my dresser was empty underneath, I could see dust and cobwebs and even a small spider! Time to vaccuum under there! Then I went through Luke's closet, and pulled some things for him to try on. He has two suits, did they fit? Does he want to keep both of them? Same with several dress shirts he hasn't touched in years. Keep or toss? The box for Goodwill is full now.
Fun fact: this time of year at exactly 3:20am, swifts wake up and start flying around, cheeping and chirping quite loudly.
Aaaand I'm done.
