After much running around, and a side trip to Archie McPhee's, I now have license plates for my car. We went to the DMV first, which is closed on Mondays, then we went to some sort of "plates and registration only" place, where [livejournal.com profile] holyoutlaw renewed his own plates, and I asked questions about what's required. They said I'd need an emissions test, so we drove a fair distance and got that taken care of. At the emissions place, they said there was another "plates only" office just up the street, so we went there and I got my plates. They didn't ask for proof of residence, or proof of insurance, all they wanted was the emissions test and a buttload of money. Vanity plates are way, WAY, *WAAAAAY* more expensive here, so I didn't get them. Poo. It cost me a little more than three times as much- without vanity plates- to register my car here, than it cost *with* vanity plates in Wisconsin. I guess it's just cheaper to be a Cheesehead...
