Thank you, everybody!
Jul. 10th, 2004 10:57 pmI had a wonderful birthday! I'm starting to feel a bit better, I think we're finally getting a handle on my "plumbing" problems.
Today was not only my 39th birthday, it was also my cousin Nissa's wedding day. But before the festivities began, I had to do something important. My drivers license expired today, and I'd put off getting it renewed. Our DMV has a tiny office in a local shopping mall that is open on Saturdays. When I got there at 10:45, there was already a long line. 45 minutes later, I get to the counter, and discover that I needed proof of residence, a piece of mail proving that I lived where I lived. I'd totally spaced that. I could have gone home and come right back with it, but another 45 minute wait in line would have put me at risk of being late for the wedding. So I figured I'd have to drive illegally till Monday. I went home and put on a purple dress that I bought two years ago, but never wore. Luckily, it still fits. I high-tailed it across town to Olbrich gardens, Madison's premier outdoor wedding spot. It was warm and sunny, with hardly a cloud in the sky. My hair was up, my neck and shoulders were exposed, and I knew I was going to get burned.
My cousin Nissa is a lovely girl, and made a very lovely bride. She's 27, I think, but she'll always be about 10 to me. She and her friends all looked so young, but they're about the same age as I was when I got married. This wedding was nothing like mine, but I couldn't help comparing. Everyone should have a day like this one in their lives. You're young and happy, and nothing else matters. You only have eyes for your partner, and the happy future ahead. I had a day like that, and it was great. But you only get one.
If you are lucky enough to find that kind of happiness a second time, it's different when you're older. When you've lived through some things.
But anyway, I'm watching them get married, and thinking about stuff. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. This couple has a lot going for them, and I think they'll do fine. I'll never forget their anniversary, either!
I could feel my shoulders burning, and I was glad to get back inside when it was over. I visited with relatives for a while then dashed back across town. If I hurried, I could just make it back to the DMV before they closed. The reception was on my side of town and wasn't supposed to start till 5:00. I walked into the shopping mall in my pretty purple dress, heels, hair piled on top of my head, and rapidly intensifying sunburn. No line at the counter this time. The guy remembered me from earlier. I remembered my proof of residence, and minutes later, I walk out with a brand new drivers license. Whenever I show it, I'm going to have to explain that "yes, that's me, my hair was up."
From there, I go to the hotel, I'm early, so I find a comfy chair in an alcove, and call
holyoutlaw. Mmmm...
A lovely dinner was had by all, then much more visiting with people, an uncle I haven't seen in two years was there, and it was wonderful to see him and his wife. Then they started the dancing. I was really wishing that a certain someone could have been there to dance with, but it was still fun to watch people. One really sweet thing the DJ did was call all the married couples out to the floor for a dance. He'd say "OK, all couples who've been married less than a year, leave the floor." The bride and groom left, and one or two other couples. Then five years or less, then ten. Fewer and fewer couples were still on the floor. When he got to 40 years, only two couples were still dancing, my folks being one of them. They've been married for 45 years, the other couple "won" by being married for 57 years! I'd never seen that done before, and I thought it was neat.
It wasn't even 10:00, but I was beat, and my sunburn was crying out for the bottle of aloe gel I keep in my fridge at home. So I said my goodbyes, and took off.
I thought a lot about age today, as I saw relatives I don't get to see that often, and how much their kids have grown. All in all, a very good birthday. It was nice to feel better, not quite normal, but definately better. And it's nice to have something to post about besides my "plumbing!"
