I can't stop thinking about that big fire at a Rhode Island night club. 90-some people died. They were there to see a washed-up heavy metal band, but still, no-one deserves to die that way.
It was an absolutely horrific scene. As someone who really likes live music and crowded dance clubs, I'll think more about my safety when I go. A guy on the news was saying when you go to a club, take stock of where your emergency exits are, just like you would on an airplane.
Madison used to have a great dance club, at the Casbah restaurant. Upstairs is a room with a beautiful hardwood floor. On Saturday nights, they'd clear out the tables, turn down the lights, and a DJ would spin fabulous world music for hours. It was a great mix of people, never too crowded, some of the best Saturday nights of my life were spent there. I'd dance till my knees were about to explode! Thinking now about the layout of that place, it would have been a deathtrap if a fire had broken out. There was only one exit. Last summer, the city council discovered that the restaurant didn't have the proper permits to have a DJ and dance in that space, and they pulled the plug on our fun. The restaurant owner, and the DJ have appealed the decision, but it doesn't look like we'll ever get that space back. I understand now that it's a safety issue, but I really miss those dances! The DJ hasn't found another adequate space to hold his world music dances.
Tonight, I'm going to see a band at a local club, and I'll make sure I know where all the exits are.
