The Blue Screen Of Death
Jun. 12th, 2011 11:16 amMy laptop is dead. As reported on Facebook, it died a dramatically sudden and resoundingly complete death. It was an old thing, thick and very heavy, it was probably state of the art in 2003. We bought it used in 2006. I used it hard, and it served me well. About a year ago, when it was in the shop for some general maintenance, they said it was way past time to replace it. Luke made a backup of it then, I should have pushed to make another backup more recently. If (and it's a BIG if) we can get the backed up stuff onto the new (used) laptop we bought yesterday, then I've only lost a years worth of photos and video. There is also a very remote chance that they'll be able to recover all my stuff off of the dead drive, and put it on the new computer. A very remote chance.
I'm sad to lose my pictures and videos. Much of the video in my rather large collection can be found on YouTube and downloaded again, but what a pain. I also had a huge, great folder of funny pictures and gifs that I saved off of Icanhascheezburger. Those will be hard to find again.
Luckily, Luke has both a desktop and a laptop, so I am not without my precious internets. His desktop keyboard is so old, most of the letters are worn off, reminding me that I'm never going to be a touch typist.
When I bring the new computer home later this week, It'll be a struggle to get it set up in a way I can use. Getting my e-mail going is a big concern. I'm such a luddite when it comes to computers, I can only understand the most basic and obsolete ways of doing things. I could say fuck it and try to embrace the newer versions of everything the new laptop will have, but I'm not sure I can do that. I need things old and simple! I still listen to cassette tapes in my car, for cryin out loud!
Speaking of my car, I need to get it washed soon, because I'm going to be covering it in magnets for the Art Car Blowout next weekend. I'm nervous about getting started, what if it looks stupid when I'm done with it? I'll be hanging around with REAL artists all weekend! Imposter syndrome strikes again!!!!
