Last Tuesday, Luke and I took part in the Ballard Missing Link rally. The Missing Link is a section of bike trail that runs through an industrial area. Many people use it for commuting everyday, and it's really dangerous. There actually isn't any bike trail through this area, but the money and plans are there to complete it. Some business owners along the Missing Link are opposed to it, and things are hung up in lawsuits. We walked down to 17th and Shilshole just as people were starting to gather. There ended up being about 250 people, most of them on bikes, many had come from some distance away. We're not bike riders, but we support making the neighborhood safer for everyone. Vote McGinn for mayor! I should download my pictures from that night, I got some good ones.

Wednesday, when I took a Pepsi out of the fridge for dinner, it didn't seem as cold as usual. I thought nothing of it and took no action.

Thursday Luke woke me up and said that the fridge was totally warm inside. It was on and running, but actually putting out heat. Everything in the freezer had thawed. Dang! I am Speaker To Landlady, so I called right away. Luke and I walk to the drugstore and pick up a few bags of ice. Butter, cheese, OJ and a few other things that still felt a little cold were packed in the cooler. Landlady and her husband (who live in Bellevue) arrive and determine that the fridge is indeed inexplicably dead. They take measurements and go off to shop for a new one. I spend the afternoon throwing out food, washing tupperware containers, and emptying jars and bottles of sauces. Landlady calls and says it was hard to find a fridge our size, but they did, and it will be delivered Saturday afternoon. Luke was off running errands with his truck, he returned with sandwiches from Rizzo's. Yum! That ended up being my dinner. It felt weird having a dead, empty fridge.

Friday was windy, early in the morning, before I went to bed, it sounded like a freight train outside. If we lost power, it wouldn't matter because there was nothing in the fridge! Friday night we treated ourselves to dinner at Snooze Junction Pizza. When we get home I carve a small pumpkin.

Saturday, the window for the fridge delivery was noon to 5pm. About 12:30, the fellas arrive. They haul away the old one, bring up the new one, and it's plugged in and running by 1:00. I call landlady to tell her and thank her for taking care of it so quickly. Perfect segue into This )

Saturday afternoon, we went to Fred Meyer to restock the fridge. The Oscar Meyer wienermobile was there! Awesome! We got to go inside it. Pretty cushy. The store was a madhouse, everyone getting ready for Halloween. Many of the employees were dressed up, and the mood was jovial. We got home, filled our new fridge, I put my pumpkin out and made a meatloaf. Sort of wanted to go to downtown Ballard to see all the families in costume, but we didn't. No trick-or-treaters, we didn't really expect any, but I bought a bag of candy bars just in case.

Sunday, we went bowling with [livejournal.com profile] dirtylibrarian. It was league time, but they were nice enough to give us a lane on the end. It's been more than two years, but I bowled really well (for me) 119, 141, and 140. After that, a nice dinner at a brew-pub, then hours of just hanging out and chatting. The kind of socialness I've been needing for a while, and some kitty time too! We got home just in time for Mad Men. It was so good we watched the encore episode immediately after. It's now about midnight, and the episode was moments from ending, when the power went out. Dark! Just like that. It's always so startling when power goes out. We can see the folks on the next block (60th St) have power. Luke and I go outside to the street. It looks like it's only our block, 58th seems to have power too. The blocks of 59th on either side of us have power. Very weird. A neighbor from across the street is also outside and says he's lived on this block for 14 years and we've never had a power outage. It's quiet. There's a full moon and it has a beautiful ring around it. So we go inside and I find some candles. We sit on the couch and talk and make up silly stories. It occurs to us that we may have to throw out another whole fridge full of food. That would suck. But after an hour and ten minutes, power returns, and we go back to our computers. A neighborhood blog reports the outage was widespread, but spotty. That would explain why it seemed like we were the only ones in the dark.

That's all I've got till I dump some pictures...
