I love Halloween, it's one of my favorite holidays. Back in Madison, [livejournal.com profile] troublebrewing would have a great party every year, and I always made an effort to put together a good costume. When I first moved to Seattle in 2005, no-one had a Halloween party, and I felt bad not having anywhere to go. Last year, Luke and I, along with [livejournal.com profile] intelligentrix and [livejournal.com profile] slave_driver, hosted a Halloween party at the house. There were some good costumes, and it was great that most everyone who came put some thought into an outfit. Luke and I came in drag, very simple, lackluster drag. I wore a shirt and tie, and a hat, Luke wore this prom dress we'd found at Goodwill. He was not a woman, rather, he was just a guy in a dress.

Last night was the Vanguard/Halloween party held at Andy & Carrie's house. [livejournal.com profile] intelligentrix was the official host and instigator of the party, I helped put the spider-webs up! At first I figured Luke and I would do the same boring drag outfits, but then I got an idea: why not dress up to a degree that no-one has seen us dress up before? We could be a Trophy Couple! Complete with trophies! Before leaving for Artcon, we went to the Tux Shop in Ballard and got Luke measured for a tuxedo. Then we stopped in Classic Consignments around the corner to find a dress for me.

On the rack, it didn't look like much, floor length, two satiny shades of grey, spaghetti straps, a few sparkles. I thought, "it might fit, I'll give it a whirl". I then had one of those moments, like the one with the Red Dress a few years ago, where you zip the zipper, look in the mirror and go "OMG, this dress was made for me!" Nicely fitted for my current shape. Very elegant and Hollywood. It wasn't terribly expensive either.

Dress and tux dealt with, I realized I'd have to do something with my hair. It's a bit past shoulder length, and I never do much with it, beyond pulling it away from my face. (This happens every time I grow out my hair, I want long hair so I look more feminine, but I never learn how to do anything pretty to it.) The day of the party, I call a random salon in the neighborhood, and tell them what I need. The gal was great, very personable, and she washed, dried, curled, poofed, formed, shaped, and pinned my hair into a classy-looking French Twist. 29 bobbie-pins and nearly a whole can of hair spray later, it was as tough as concrete!

Before we leave for the party, we take a few pictures.

Here are two of them )

Brandishing store-bought trophies, the Ultimate Trophy Couple is a hit at the party! What fun! I can see wearing the dress at next years LJ party at Wiscon.
