At The Risk Of Being Social...
Jun. 21st, 2007 11:27 pmLuke bought me a permanent LJ membership, I suppose I better get busy and use it.
So, *ahem*...
We haven't been getting out much. Staying in is so much easier. Safer. Fewer opportunities to be rejected by people.
Last weekend was the Fremont fair, and it was like being at a convention and staying in the hotel. All this stuff was going on around us, and we could get away from it anytime we wanted. But we spent a lot of time with the Art Car folks (and their wonderful dogs!), and we stuffed our faces repeatedly with street fair food. Mmmm... funnel cake...
There was a cookout for the Art Car people Saturday night, and we almost didn't go. But, like the rest of the fair, it was a very short walk from our apartment, so there was really no excuse. We got there early, not knowing too many people, and we sat at a table by ourselves. Soon, one couple sat down and started talking to us, then other people Luke knew joined us as well. Then
lara7 arrived. Yay! We ended up having a great time, and kicking ourselves for almost skipping it. It felt so good to be social.
On Tuesday
scarlettina posted that she was going to dinner at a restaurant about 20 paces from my apartment, and would anyone want to join her. Luke was away at class, but I said yes, and so did three other people I didn't know. I was nervous at first, since
scarlettina was running a few minutes late, and everybody else knew each other. But I ended up having a really, really nice evening.
Tomorrow is the first Clarion West party, and we might go.
Might.
We keep going back and forth about it. Risks and advantages. It's been nearly eight months since we left the crap and drama of Jane's house behind. The people who no longer desire our company because of all that are people we don't need to bother with. But some of them will be at the party, possibly even Jane herself (very unlikely, but possible). On the other hand, we need to be more social, and see the people who will be there who may actually want to see us.
Maybe we'll go, maybe we won't.
I spent Potlatch and Wiscon avoiding a few people who claim to be my friend, but they are only friendly to me if the subject of Jane is danced around and not talked about. I cannot speak my mind about what happened. What I say took place in that house could not possibly be the truth. I refuse to pursue any friendship with those stipulations. And that means that most of Seattle fandom does not seek me (or us) out for socializing.
We're getting used to it though, and finding new people to hang out with. And when we're not out and about, we're enjoying life together in our cozy Fremont sanctuary. And next week, for Luke's 50th birthday, we're going on a cruise in Alaska!
