Saturday afternoon, after the ugly discussion with Jane, Luke called about an apartment ad on craigslist. We went to see it Sunday morning. It's microscopic, ridiculously overpriced, and gets no direct sunlight. It's also available immediately. We filled out an application and weighed the pros and cons overnight. We did not sleep. Monday, they called and said we were approved. After work, we went and signed the lease. We pick up the keys Wednesday evening.

The pros:
*Downtown Fremont. The PCC building. You can't get any more downtown Fremont than that.
*New, very secure and supposedly quiet building.
*New appliances, including dishwasher, garbage disposal, and a built-in microwave.
*Washer/dryer in the unit!
*We can move in immediately. Like, this weekend.
*Previous tenant paid security deposit and November rent as an incentive.
*With small comes cozy, and we'll be able to cook together comfortably.
*OMG Downtown Fremont!

The cons:
*Again, the very small size and high price.
*North facing, no view whatsoever.
*I'll need to keep my storage locker.
*Most of our books will have to be stored.
*There is underground parking, but at a steep cost.
*Apartment living means no more stereo at the volume we've grown accustomed to. (Jane always swore up and down that she barely heard the music we played upstairs, and it never disturbed her, even when it was pretty loud.)

Sure, it was crazy to take the first place we saw, but we've heard the horror stories about apartment hunting in this area. No one could say if we'd find something bigger or cheaper that we could move into as quickly. We felt coerced and angry about the whole situation, and yet relieved when we signed the papers. The place will be a very tight squeeze, but it'll be ours.
We're not expecting many offers to help us move, but if we could get one or two large vehicles and some warm bodies this weekend, we could move the big stuff from the house and from my locker. Everything else can come over in carloads that we can do ourselves. I suppose I can spin it this way: The sooner we are out of this house, the happier Jane is. Making Jane happy is very important to some people, so you'll be doing her a favor by helping us get out of this house as quickly as possible.
