Jul. 6th, 2006 09:06 pmHa! Just kidding!
Last Friday was Luke's birthday, we spent it at Mashiko's, his favorite Japanese restaurant, with
fringefaan and Denys. The dinner and conversation was wonderful. I took Monday off, and was looking forward to a four-day weekend filled with household projects, but it didn't quite turn out that way.
Saturday, Luke did a number on his back. It wasn't anything specific, his back just goes out from time to time. He spent much of the day flat and barely able to walk, with me fetching what he needed. I worried about leaving him alone, but he convinced me to go to Vanguard that evening. I got a ride from
intelligentrix and ended up having a great time. Played a rousing game of badminton in the yard with
hank,
seattlesparks and Katie V, who made up for her lack of accuracy (she's what- 8 or so?) with a great deal of enthusiasm! Carrie and Andy turned up with a big bowl of fresh raspberries picked from their garden, along with homemade biscuits still warm from the oven. Add a can of whip cream- YUM! Marshmallows were toasted on the grill, again- yum...
Sunday, Luke graduated from flatness to a slow, careful walk around the block. Later in the afternoon, a slightly longer walk.
Monday, we walked (nearly back to our regular pace) to the bank, a Thai place on 45th for lunch, then the drugstore. Later, towards sunset, we walked to Gasworks Park and back. A big inflatable Statue of Liberty head was set up on top of the hill. One of the barges that the fireworks would be launched from was already in place in the middle of the lake, circled by police boats.
Tuesday, the 4th of July. It started out quiet. The house under renovation two doors down, a noisy construction site seven days a week since the earliest days of spring, was blissfully quiet. What a treat that was, to sleep in, really and truly undisturbed by the usual racket. Around lunch time, we again walked to Gasworks Park, to check out the crowds, and scope out places on sidestreets to watch the fireworks later on. We made our way home, and it was hot in the middle of the afternoon. We stepped in a sprinkler in somebody's yard to cool off, then bought a glass of cloyingly sweet pink lemonade from some kids who'd set up shop in their driveway. It felt so American...
The smells of grilling coming from every other yard had me seriously drooling for some barbecue. We sat at our computers for a couple hours, while clouds blew in and briefly dropped a bit of rain, along with a few claps of thunder. By dusk it was clear again. We'd selected a spot in a parking lot on 34th street as our first choice for fireworks viewing, and our instincts were right, it was great! We were close enough to feel the boom, and had a really great view. Much as I love the hokey, small-town feel of the fireworks at Shorewood in Madison, these were world-class, big city fireworks, and they seriously kicked ass. Amazing shapes and color patterns. Every few minutes, I'd say "OOOH COOL- I've never seen ones like *that* before!" When it was over, we walked home, glad not to have to worry about the traffic snarl that started the minute the last shell went off. Across the street, our neighbors were having a party. They were shooting things off, big things, till 2am, and had music blasting well past 3am. Asshole college kids who obviously didn't have to work the next day. Luke didn't sleep at all, I stuffed earplugs down my ears and managed to get a few hours in.
And so I'm still at the same temp assignment I've had since March. It was supposed to be about a week. I guess they like me..
Yesterday we dug out the grill that was languishing under the deck in the backyard. We hosed it off, rendering a very, VERY, and I mean *VERY* Large Spider homeless. It's actually a nice little grill, in good shape, not rusty or anything. Today, I bought charcoal and lighter fluid. Tommorow, we cook outside. With flames.
